Jeep is known for crafting quality SUVs, and some of their most popular options are the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee 4xe. These vehicles can be configured to offer exceptional off-road capabilities or a luxury driving experience you won’t soon forget. There’s much to enjoy about these SUVs, so keep reading as we discuss the benefits of each.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a comfortable and spacious SUV offering off-road capability and class-leading towing. This model is powered by a 293-hp 3.6-liter V6 that comes standard with front-wheel drive but can be optioned with a four-wheel drive.
Though the exterior is rugged, the interior is not. The cabin offers an updated and modernized design with essential features. Higher trims have even more luxury amenities like leather upholstery, an open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays.
Installed in every cabin is a slew of tech to entertain all passengers. In the center dash sits an 8.4- or 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. In-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather updates are optional. More advanced features like a digital gauge cluster, a 10.0-inch head-up display, or a second 10.3-inch display are also offered but only in higher trims.
Along with an abundance of tech, Jeep has also outfitted the Grand Cherokee with several advanced driver-aids. These include pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
Five trims are available for the Grand Cherokee.
Loredo: The Loredo is the base trims, and it features heated mirrors, an 8.4-inch central touchscreen, and a six-speaker audio system. Safety features like adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and forward collision mitigation also exist.
Limited: The Limited has the same features as the Loredo, but more advanced tech like a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, a navigation system, and a terrain-based drive mode system with five settings.
Trailhawk: This off-road centric trim comes equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive. There are also features like all-terrain tires, hill ascent and descent control, front tow hooks, and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system.
Overland: The Overland mixes the luxury features of the Loredo with the rugged amenities of the Trailhawks to offer a unique SUV. Additionally, there are features like a hands-free liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient cabin lighting.
Summit: As the top-level trim, the Summit is well-equipped, offering features from all the other trims. The Summit also has a wood-trimmed steering wheel, a front-seat massage function, an Active Driving Assist system, and an automated parking system.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe is the plug-in hybrid variant of the Grand Cherokee model. Each trim is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a 17.3-kWh battery pack. This combination results in the model producing 375 horsepower, 470 lbs.-ft of torque, and 23/24 miles per gallon. Plus, as a plug-in hybrid, the 4xe also has 26 miles of electric-only driving.
Since the 4xe is essentially the same as the base Grand Cherokee model, the interior is about the same. There’s plenty of space to get in and out and room for passengers up to six feet tall. Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system is found in every cabin, which offers crisp graphics and an integrated navigation system. Smartphone integration is also standard, as are several USB ports and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
As for passenger safety, Jeep has outfitted the Grand Cherokee 4xe with the same breadth of the advanced driver-aids offered in the base Grand Cherokee model. These features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, plus more.
Much of the Grand Cherokee and 4xe are similar, but their trim selection is not. Six trims are offered for the Grand Cherokee 4xe and they include the 4xe, Anniversary 4xe, Trailhawk 4xe, Overland 4xe, Summit 4xe and Summit Reserve 4xe.
The base model is surprisingly well-equipped, offering more than most base trims. As for the rest of the lineup, trims like the Trailhawk 4xe are geared more for off-roading, while the Summit 4xe is designed to be more luxurious and upscale.
No matter what kind of SUV you need, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can oblige.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee 4xe are quality SUVs inside and out. Each model offers trims that can go off-road and ones that can provide a more luxurious drive.
